If you are planning to immigrate or study abroad, chances are that you have heard of and started preparing for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Much like university entrance tests, the IELTS is used by universities, colleges, and immigration departments to assess the English language skills of non-native speakers. The IELTS test measures four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. For most Indian students, the writing section is the most challenging because the educational system in India is void of writing assignments. This blog will focus on the writing test and provide tips and strategies to prepare for it.

How is the General Training Writing Task Different from the Academic Writing Task?

The Writing task is different for the General Training and the Academic IELTS. The former has prompts based on general understanding, and the responses can be more fluid and less formal in tone; the latter tests your writing skills in an academic context. The tone of your response must be formal.

In writing task 1 of the General Training, you are expected to draft a letter responding to a prompt. The letter can be personal, formal or semi-formal in style. In task 2, you will be asked to write an essay responding to the point of view, argument or problem. The essay can be more personal in style. You can draw from your own experiences to support your point of view.

The writing test is divided into two tasks. In task 1, you must write a report based on visual information, such as a graph, chart, or table. In task 2, you are asked to write an essay responding to a general topic or argument. The writing test assesses your writing ability. The examiner expects your writing to be clear, well-structured, and coherent, qualities needed in an academic writing context.

We've compiled a few tried and tested tips and strategies to help you prepare for both versions of the writing tasks.
